Before His death, resurrection and ascension, Christ promised to send to His disciples the Holy Spirit, who would empower and enable them to be witnesses to the Lord Jesus Christ and all He had done, but Jesus also prepares them for rejection and persecution from unbelievers, even from those within the outward pale of God's people and church in this world.
